Social media and emergency response

2012-02-01 09:46

In collaboration with the department of applied IT at University of Gothenburg, TUCAP will examine how information from social media can be used by authorities for emergency response. A majority of all communication during accidents and crises takes place within informal social networks, often through social media.

Agencies and organizations responsible for responding to emergency situations want to create methods and tools to access and take advantage of this information.

The research project Social media and emergency response focuses on two distinct challenges

  • How can organizations detect and analyze data from a multitude of people to get a better understanding of what happened?
  • How can organizations detect and verify information from a few individuals during small critical events to initiate emergency response?
